Sporting Events
When we discuss “sporting events” in generic as well as specific terms, it becomes necessary to cite the importance and space of sports in our life. Partly because whenever we think of sporting events, the idea comes in only one line- sporting events which are familiar to us; events which are in our knowledge, mainly through media. And hence we remain unaware of sporting events which happen on many other (mostly small) levels. Therefore, it becomes important to discuss the 'importance' as well as the 'important areas' of sports. Sports activities take place in schools and colleges. Not only in all educational institutions, but many small and big towns, cities, districts and villages show interest in sporting events. School authorities say that sports are very important for a young child because it helps him to grow active. Sports play a pivotal role in the overall development of a child from his middle school to high school- the reasons are generic and many. Sports played in villages, towns, etc, have a tribal history to it.
The value of sports cannot be summed up only as 'a medium of fun and recreation'. It is definitely a lot more. The history of mankind has always been marked with battles and wars. Conflict is essential in the the struggle for existence, and only the strongest survives (also called 'survival of the fittest'). In the animal kingdom, we see competitions and fights on almost everything- food, mates, territories or even out of spite. Man being an animal is no better. There is a psychological tendency in every human being, to fight. But with the onset of civilization, the “physical fight” has come up with an alternative and we call it Sporting Events! Every sporting event has become a ground to prove our mettle and show superiority over others.
Right from the times of Ancient Greece to Roman culture, sporting events keep on gaining potence. The first Olympic games were held in Greece, in the year 776 BC. In the 6th century, Romans had few very important, the then traditional, gladiator games, in their amphitheater Colosseum. The motives of sporting events also changed with time. The 1936 Berlin Olympic games became a perfect propaganda for Hitler. He found a good means to show to the world that Nazi Germany is a superior race. Their idea behind playing Berlin Olympic games was not as common as others'. Hitler, at that point of time did not believe in winning alone. He wanted to achieve his main motive of pushing back all other nations. Where as, Japanese used Tokyo Olympic games in a very positive sense of the term. Japan wanted to show the technical development of the country, to the whole world. The games were telecasted to the United States via Syncom 3, the first geostationary communication satellite.
